DPRTE 2018: Opportunities for the UK defence sector across the Atlantic

Defence Procurement, Research, Technology & Exportability (DPRTE) 2018 returns to Cardiff on 27 March with a new zone for 2018 – Doing Business with the US Department of Defense.

The US defence market is the largest in the world with a proposed defence procurement budget of over $686 billion for the forthcoming financial year.

The interactive sessions on offer in the new zone are designed to equip organisations with the insight and knowledge they need to develop business opportunities in this lucrative market.

US politicians recently reached a two-year deal that would set US Defence spending at US$700 billion for 2018 and US$716 billion for 2019, meaning that it will be spending more on defence than China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, UK, India, France and Japan combined. The US$100 billion+ increase in the defence budget for 2018 would itself surpass the total annual military budget of any other country, apart from China.

Individual programs within this budget, for example the HUMVEE replacement known as JLTV, can reach into the tens of millions of dollars, with opportunities for UK systems suppliers, supply chain companies and technology providers.

Although the US defence market can be extremely lucrative there are a number of potential challenges that companies need to consider. The US defense market has been regarded as being quite a difficult (export control/ITAR) and closed one for many years (Buy American Act), and the 2016 election of President Donald Trump, with his considerable emphasis on US jobs, has been perceived by many as not easing this situation.

The delegation being organised by the British Defence Staff in Washington DC is intended to brief UK companies on the considerable commercial opportunities that still exist in the US defence market, even under the current administration. Members of the delegation will discuss the best routes to market and how to tackle the real and perceived barriers to entry, including export control (ITAR), licensing and IP protection.

Representatives from the US Department of Defense (DoD) will be on hand to provide advice and guidance on how to access the wealth of opportunities available within the world’s largest defense procurement marketplace through a range of training sessions and one to one meetings.
