An article in the MOD Guide to Security and defence 2019 states that “UK cyberspace is under siege”.
It also highlights the progress made by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) as it celebrates its second anniversary.

“Under siege”
The NCSC warns that the “cyber security threat goes far beyond Russia” and wants to help businesses of all sizes tackle high-volume cyber crime threats.
According to Ciaran Martin, Chief Executive of the NSCS, the organisation is “calling out unacceptable behaviour by hostile states” and is providing businesses with specific information that will reduce the chance of cyber attacks affecting them. This is part of a major plan NCSC has as the organisation moves into its third year.
The article, titled ‘Under Siege: NCSC reveals full extent of UK cyber attacks’, states that:
“In the two years since its formation, NCSC has taken the initiative in safeguarding UK cyberspace. It established the pioneering Active Cyber Defence (ACD) programme to fend off high-volume commodity attacks – the kind that can have an immeasurable impact on our everyday lives.
“To date, ACD has slashed the nation’s share of ‘visible’ global phishing attacks by more than half, from 5.3% to 2.4%, while removing 138,398 UK-hosted phishing sites between September 2017 and August 2018 alone.”
