NATO Ambassadors and EU Commissioner have met to discuss further cooperation in order to enhance and strengthen European defence.
Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed European Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska to NATO to brief the council on the latest developments regarding the European Defence Action Plan and the European Defence Fund.
The meeting also marked the anniversary of the Joint Declaration on NATO-EU cooperation, signed in Warsaw last July.
Work is currently underway to improve the coherence between the two bodies, with joint work improving the defence capabilities for both. The NATO Secretary General is very keen to bring a more robust defence capability to Europe, providing a larger contribution to NATO and thus sharing the defence burden more evenly across the allied nations.
The European Defence Action Plan and the European Defence Fund can help make Europe safer by offering valuable opportunities to acquire new defence capabilities and reduce market fragmentation in Europe.
Commissioner Bieńkowska’s visit is part of the active dialogue between NATO and the EU. This dialogue is testimony to the commitment to security, mutual transparency and close coordination that NATO shares with the EU.
