Scheme description: Scheme comprises an electrical interconnector (HVDC cable) between Britain and Belgium.
National Grid and Elia, Belgiums electricity transmission system operator, are proposing to construct an electrical interconnector a cable that links the electricity networks of different countries between the UK and Belgium.
The interconnector project will consist of a subsea cable connected to a convertor station and an electricity substation in each country, which will allow electricity to flow in either direction between the two countries. The interconnector will have a capacity of approximately 1000MW. In the UK the intention is to locate the electricity substation and converter station on part of the site formerly occupied by the Richborough Power Station in Kent.
Lot 1: HVDC convertors: 2 HVDC convertors (1 in United Kingdom / 1 in Belgium)
Type VSC. Nominal capacity: +/-1000MW. Detailed design, engineering, procurement, manufacture, installation, construction, testing, commissioning and maintenance of the 2 convertors.
Lot 2: HVDC Marine Cable: Total Length of route 140km made up of ~2off 130km subsea DC cables, ~5km DC land cable and possibly ~5km 400kV AC land cable or GIL connections.
Detailed design, engineering, procurement, manufacture, installation, construction, testing, commissioning and maintenance of the cable element (mainly marine cable) of the HVDC link.
Lot 3: HVDC convertors and Marine HVDC Cable1:
HVDC convertors: 2 HVDC convertors (1 in United Kingdom / 1 in Belgium), Type VSC, Nominal capacity: +/-1000MW. HVDC marine cable: Total length of route 140km made up of ~2off 130km subsea DC cables, ~5km DC land cable and possibly ~5km 400kV AC land cable or GIL connections.

MMT was awarded a contract for Seabed Survey & Seasoil Sampling for the proposed Electrical Interconnector between UK and Belgium. The purpose of the survey is to determine the ecological, ground conditions and installation for the design and installation of the interconnector cable.
The scope of the contract includes Geotechnical, Geophysical, Benthic and Topographical survey campaigns. The surveys will support an ongoing desktop study to identify the route to be utilized for the installation of the interconnector cable. The cable corridor to be investigated is in total 130km long and 500m wide.
Please note that TEP will also act as Waste Management & Arboricultural Survey Consultants;
Curran Environmental Consulting Ltd is the Sustainability Consultant;
RSK Group Plc is the Flood Risk Consultant
; Energy Council is the Breeam Consultant for this project.
Siemens is to supply eight converter transformers for the Nemo Link project, a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system connecting Belgium and Great Britain. The customer is Nemo Link, a joint venture between National Grid Nemo Link Limited, a subsidiary company of the UK’s National Grid Plc, and the Belgian Elia Group. The HVDC link will deliver a transmission capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW) – enough to power 500,000 households. Commercial operation of the link is scheduled to commence in 2019.
J Muprhy have secured the contract for the converter station element of this, situated in Kent.
Two previous contracts secured are for Siemens and J-Power Systems, a Japanese compay, a subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. The contracts are together valued at about £500m. Siemens will build the converter stations in both Kent and Zeebrugge using their HVDC Plus technology and they will have a 5 year service and maintenance agreement. J-Power systems will design, manufacture and install the state of the art HVDC XLPE[1] cable system the first time it will be used operationally as a High Voltage Direct Current link at 400kV.
